1MW solar PV array at Morrisons RDC installed by GMI Energy
GMI Energy install 1MW of solar PV at Morrisons RDC, Bridgwater using an unusual East / West layout to maximise savings
Morrisons award-winning 1MW solar PV array
GMI Energy's award winning rooftop installation at Morrisons RDC in Bridgwater is roughly 20 times the size of the typical 50kWp systems currently being fitted by the team at Morrisons new stores and is expected to save somewhere in the region of 8,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over it’s 25 year lifetime.
The system is unusual in that the panels have been laid east / west in order to make the most of the available roof area. Traditionally, a solar PV system is installed on a south-facing roof but recent studies have suggested that an east / west system works just as well, if not better. Careful monitoring of Morrison's solar PV array shows that it is already exceeding the production levels that were originally anticipated.
In October 2013, the system received Best Commercial Rooftop Installation at the highly acclaimed Solar Power Portal Awards.
Speaking at the awards the then Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Greg Barker commented "GMI Energy’s award winning project fitting solar panels to the Morrisons distribution centre in Bridgwater is a terrific example of how solar PV can be successfully deployed on large scale commercial rooftops. I am keen to see more developments like this in the future."
Ray Noble, Photovoltaic Specialist at the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and Judge at the awards said "the judges chose this project due to the exemplary use of the new roof space, mounting panels both east and west to maximise the generation area available. The installation was designed to be totally invisible from the ground level, while generating a significant contribution to the building's electricity requirements. The judges felt that this clearly demonstrates what the future should be for all buildings of this type and this example should encourage others to follow."
