Challoch Mun Farm Biomass System
Mr Ean Stuart recently took the plunge to invest in a biomass energy system for Challoch Mun Farm in Stranrear after realising the potential to vastly reduce heating fuel costs from an existing heating oil system, whilst earning a generous income from the Government Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.
GMI Energy installed an 80kWp Veto biomass boiler that is RHI certified and 91% efficient, supplying the domestic hot water system to lambing and calving parlours. The system is a multi-fuel system that has the ability to burn a variety of fuels, including pellets, chips, logs, peat, briquettes, grain and rapeseed. The performance can be modulated down to 10% of the overall capacity, much like a typical UK gas boiler, and the system is automatically fed and controlled remotely.
With the RHI paying 8.6p / kWh and fuel costs at roughly half of the existing fuel costs, it is anticipated that the system costs will pay back in just 3.7 years, giving a generous ROI of 37%.
The RHI agreement is guaranteed for 20 years, which means that after 4 years Challoch Mun Farm will benefit from a system that is cash positive for 16 years, after when we would still expect generous fuel savings through this low cost fuel source.
GMI Energy took care of the installation from concept to completion, the install took place during an extremely busy period on the farm, lambing and calving season. Our installation team were on the farm for 3 weeks however this was not continuous as we had to work in with the farm activities during this busy period.
“From first contact with GMI we found them to be a credible no nonsense organisation that dispelled any myths associated with biomass installs and gave sensible advice geared to our particular project.
The install commenced during lambing and calving season when the farm was particularly busy so GMI worked around our schedule, even pulling off site to accommodate us. The install was completed over 3 weeks with the team displaying a professional but practical approach throughout. We would have no hesitation in recommending GMI to any potential customer.”
